Interesting Fact : Many people don’t realize, including residents of Bergen County, the not insignificant part the County played during the Revolutionary war. In fact, in the summer and fall of 1780, over 14,000 soldiers in the Continental Army encamped in River Edge, Oradell and Paramus. (the area at the time was called “Steenrapie”). George Washington also set up his headquarters at New Bridge in River Edge (Zabriskie- Steuben house) which still stands today, and from which military orders were given and strategy coordinated. None other than Alexander Hamilton also stayed at New Bridge, and at that time was down on the Army and pessimistic about its chances.
